The Songbook
Somewhere between a joke and a hobby, I started writing shanties, and they turned into the most fun I have making music. A good one is built to be shouted by a crew that is slightly out of time with itself, and there is no such thing as too many verses about a ship that is probably going to sink.
Some of these came out of games. Some came out of nothing at all. Play them loud, and badly, with other people.
Writing shanties
A shanty is the easiest kind of song to write badly and the hardest to write well. The tune has to survive being shouted by people who cannot sing, half of them a beat behind. That rules out anything clever. Short lines, and a chorus you have heard once and already know.
Suno does the singing. I write the words and the style prompt, then regenerate until the take has the right amount of wrong in it.
